MONTAGE:  VARIOUS SCENES FROM COP SHOWS

 

The scenes accompany the announcer.  They need not be from the actual shows mentioned.  Indeed, I think it better to make phony scenes in the style of the various shows, which would not only be hilarious but show that we really know what we’re talking about by matching the look of these shows:  the black-and-white goofy comedy of a couple cops in a car with a fake-looking backdrop; the grainy ‘70s cop show; the slick ‘80s; a stark beating scene from NYPD Blue; a stylized autopsy sequence from CSI, etc.

 

ANNOUNCER

(voice-over)

In the old days, there were cop shows like Car 54, Where Are You?.  Then came grittier shows like Hill Street Blues.  Then Miami Vice showed us the even grittier world of Miami drug czars in the 1980s.  Then came the even grittier NYPD Blue, which featured cops beating suspects and full rear nudity.  The police and legal procedural Law and Order spun off Special Victims Unit, specifically specializing only in the grisliest of crimes.  Then came CSI, which not only featured grisly crimes but actually showed us autopsies of the victims.

 

 

BLACK SCREEN

 

The montage dies, zooming to a white point like when an old TV is turned off.

 

ANNOUNCER

(voice-over)

Starting this fall, all of that’s history.

 

 

LOGO:  “CORRUPT”

 

The logo appears with rapturous music that serves as the show’s theme.

 

 

EXT. NEW YORK CITY STREET – NIGHT

 

As the announcer speaks, a woman walks down the street in high heels, only to have someone rush out and put a knife to her throat.

 

ANNOUNCER

(voice-over)

This isn’t about normal criminals.  This is about the worst of the worst.  The real psychos.  The ones you’ve never seen before.  And we’re going to show all of it, the way only pay cable can.

 

 

EXT. NEW YORK CITY STREET – DAY

 

We’re looking at a body in a dumpster.  It’s grisly, awful, barely recognizable as human.  We pull out to see that cops have gathered and are talking about it.  MIKE arrives, steps swiftly across the police tape, and talks to another cop, BILL.

 

MIKE

What do we got here?

 

BILL

Twenty-year-old female.  Throat split, ear-to-ear.

 

 

CLOSE-UP:  VICTIM’S HEAD – FLASHBACK

 

She’s gagged and weeping.  A knife comes onto screen and slashes her throat.  Graphic, but brief.

 

 

EXT. NEW YORK CITY STREET – CONTINUOUS

 

Mike is examining the body while Bill stands nearby.  Using tweezers, Mike pulls something out of her mouth.

 

MIKE

There’s trace fabric still in her mouth.

 

BILL

Fabric?

 

MIKE

Probably from a sock.  She was gagged with it.

 

 

CLOSE-UP:  VICTIM’S HEAD – BEFORE EARLIER FLASHBACK

 

She’s gagged and weeping.  A hand is beating her viciously.  Her face is bruised.  Graphic stuff, in close-up, the perpetrator off-camera.

 

 

EXT. NEW YORK CITY STREET – CONTINUOUS

 

Mike continues his examination of the body.

 

MIKE

She was kept prisoner.

 

BILL

Her face looks like it’s been used like a punching bag.

 

MIKE

This girl was tortured.

 

BILL

Tortured?

 

MIKE

Look at her nipples.

 

 

CLOSE-UP:  VICTIM’S NIPPLES

 

There’s an imprint on either side of them.  Mike’s fingers are pointing to these imprints.

 

MIKE

(continuing)

See these imprints there and there?  They’re from some sort of clamp.

 

 

EXT. NEW YORK CITY STREET – CONTINUOUS

 

Mike continues his examination of the body.

 

MIKE

(continuing)

Probably electrocuted.  My guess is you’ll find the same on the clitoris.

 

BILL

Jesus.

 

MIKE

Probably electrocuted.  My guess is you’ll find the same on the clitoris.

 

Mike moves to her lower body.

 

BILL

What kind of guy did this?

 

MIKE

You tell me.

(pauses)

This woman was pregnant.

 

BILL

How do you know?

 

 

CLOSE-UP:  VICTIM’S BELLY – FLASHBACK

 

Hands dripping in blood pull a tiny fetus out of a body, gaping hole of a stomach.

 

MIKE

(voice-over)

He pulled the fetus out of her.  While she was still alive.

 

 

EXT. NEW YORK CITY STREET – CONTINUOUS

 

Mike continues his examination of the body.

 

MIKE

(continuing)

You can still see the umbilical cord, dangling out of her.

 

BILL

God.  You think this was some sort of baby-snatching thing?

 

MIKE

I don’t think so.  I don’t think she was that far along.  It couldn’t have survived outside of her body.

 

BILL

Then why do it?  What are we talking here?

 

MIKE

I don’t know, but that wasn’t the only hole he made.  See this?

 

 

CLOSE-UP:  PART OF VICTIM’S BELLY

 

Dried blood, with garbage clinging to it.  Mike proves a hole in her side, which is hard to see clearly but which corresponds to Mike’s descriptions.  He probes it with his gloved hand as he speaks.

 

MIKE

(continuing, voice-over)

There’s a second hole here, in her side.  Ragged edges.  A knife did this, probably serrated.

 

 

EXT. NEW YORK CITY STREET – CONTINUOUS

 

Mike continues his examination of the body.  Mike is reaching in, probing the wound.

 

BILL

At least she was dead first, based on the blood there.

 

MIKE

She was, but there’s signs of trauma to the wound.  I want a rape kit done.

 

BILL

Of course.  We do that normally.

 

Mike snaps off his gloves and walks away.

 

MIKE

Not just of the vagina.  Of that wound.

 

 

INT. CORRONER’S OFFICE

 

Mike enters the lab, where the CORRONER is working with victim’s body, which lies stretched out, cold.

 

MIKE

You got my results?

 

CORRONER

Rape kit came up positive.  Vaginal, anal, and the wound.

 

MIKE

I wanna nail this guy.

 

CORRONER

That’s not it, Mike.  We tested the DNA.  There were over twenty different DNA signatures.

 

MIKE

A gang bang?  Some kind of… initiation thing?

 

CORRONER

We also found this.

 

The coroner hands Mike a plastic baggie with a broken piece of PVC pipe in it.

 

MIKE

What’s this?

 

CORRONER

It’s PVC.  Probably from a pipe.  We found it inside the vagina.

 

MIKE

Those bastards raped her hard enough to break this off in her?

 

The coroner stares, sadly.

 

 

EXT. NEW YORK CITY STREET – LATER

 

Mike and Bill walk towards a suspicious YOUTH.

 

ANNOUNCER

(voice-over)

You’ve seen a lot of tough cops, but never one like this.

 

The youth recognizes them and takes off running.  The two cops follow.  Mike is the more aggressive of the two.

 

BILL

Stop!  Police!

 

The chase continues into an alleyway, where Mike grabs the youth’s jacket and throws him into a brick wall.

 

YOUTH

Ow!  I got rights!

 

MIKE

I’m investigating a girl that was gang-raped.  I don’t give a shit about your rights!

 

YOUTH

I didn’t do anything!

 

Mike holds the youth against the wall, obviously causing the youth pain.  Bill arrives and stands watch and Mike goes to work.

 

MIKE

I don’t think you did.  I just want information.

 

YOUTH

I don’t know anything!

 

Mike slams the youth into the wall, breaking his nose.

 

MIKE

We found her in your neighborhood.  In a dumpster.  Who gang-rapes, tortures, and kills girls around here, huh?

 

YOUTH

I don’t know anything!  You broke my fucking nose!

 

Mike pulls his gun and pushes it hard into the youth’s back.

 

MIKE

You know everyone in the neighborhood.  All the gangs.  You worried about your reputation or something?  ‘Cause if you don’t give it up, I’m not even going to play with you.  I’m just going to shoot you in the stomach and let you bleed out right here.

 

YOUTH

I swear to God, I don’t know anything!  I’d tell you, man!  I’d tell you!

 

BILL

Mike…

 

Mike shoots the youth in the foot.

 

YOUTH

Fuck!  Ow!  Ow!

 

MIKE

You don’t like it, blame the people in this neighborhood who won’t talk to us.  Them, I can’t hit.  You, I don’t give a shit about.

 

YOUTH

Okay, okay, okay.  I asked around, after that girl turned up.  Turns out someone saw a car pull up and dump her.

 

BILL

And you didn’t fucking report it?  Son of a bitch!  Shoot the guy, Mike.

 

YOUTH

Yo, you supposed to be the good cop!

 

Mike readies his gun.

 

YOUTH

(continuing)

No, no, no, no!  I didn’t see it!  A girl did.  She was scared.  They don’t trust you cops ‘round here, man.  But what she saw, you won’t believe.

 

MIKE

Out with it, motherfucker!

 

YOUTH

It was a Beamer dropped her off.  Three white guys.  In fucking sweaters.

 

BILL

Lying bastard.

 

Mike presses his gun hard to the back of the youth’s head – so hard that we can feel it.

 

MIKE

I’m going to shoot him, Bill.  Watch out for me.

 

BILL

You got it.

 

Bill looks around.

 

 

CLOSE-UP:  THE YOUTH’S PANTS AS URINE STREAMS DOWN THEM

 

It runs down the leg and into the wound from the gunshot, a fact we see in detail.

 

YOUTH

(pleading)

I’m not fucking lying, man!  I swear, I swear!

 

 

EXT. NEW YORK CITY ALLEYWAY – CONTINUOUS

 

MIKE

Calm down.  I believe you.

 

Mike walks off, leaving the youth slumped against the wall, crying.

 

YOUTH

Fuck.  Fuck.  Oh, God.  Fuck.

 

 

EXT. UPSTATE COUNTRY CLUB

 

Mike and Bill pull up in their unmarked police car.

 

ANNOUNCER

(voice-over)

But Mike’s got a secret.

 

The two go inside.
